Built Through the Quiet Days: The Story Behind GAYA, From Puchong to Semenyih
Behind Gaya Studio in Puchong and Gaya Chai in Setia EcoHill 2, Semenyih is a homegrown journey shaped by long days, personal sacrifice, setbacks and one determination — to keep showing up.
Gaya Group of Company
SELANGOR, MALAYSIA — Behind the name GAYA are two very different businesses. One is a beauty and grooming studio in Puchong Prima.
The other is a neighbourhood chai café in Setia EcoHill 2, Semenyih.
But behind both is the same vision — and a journey built far more on persistence than overnight success.
GAYA was not created with the backing of a celebrity name, a massive social-media following or the guarantee of customers lining up from day one.
It has been built while balancing a full-time professional career, family responsibilities, financial commitments and the everyday realities of turning an idea into a sustainable business. And the journey has not always been easy.
There have been days filled with preparation, excitement and hope, only for very few customers to arrive.
One particularly difficult moment came after preparing a special breakfast offering at Gaya Chai. Everything was ready. Food had been prepared and there was genuine excitement about introducing something affordable to the community.
But the expected customers never came.
Rather than letting the freshly prepared food go to waste, it was eventually given away. For a small business, an empty table represents more than a missed sale. Behind it are ingredients, preparation, rent, salaries, utilities, time and hope.
But the next day, the doors opened again.
That experience captures much of what GAYA stands for today:
“A brand isn't built only on the days when the shop is full. Sometimes it is built on the days when nobody comes — and you still find the courage to open the doors again tomorrow.” Building While Life Continues
Behind the scenes, building GAYA has meant early mornings, late evenings and constant movement between professional, family and business responsibilities.
The journey has continued even through periods of significant physical difficulty.
There were still menus to improve, recipes to test, suppliers to manage, promotions to create, customers to serve and countless small operational problems to solve.
At the same time, Gaya Studio required its own attention.
There was no large team behind the scenes handling every aspect of branding, marketing and business development.
Much of GAYA has been built by learning, experimenting, making mistakes, adjusting and trying again.
Gaya Studio — Confidence in Puchong
Located in Puchong Prima, Selangor, Gaya Studio represents the confidence side of GAYA.
Built around the promise “Tampil Yakin Setiap Hari,” the unisex studio brings hair, beauty and grooming services together for the local community.
Beyond men's and women's hairstyling, its services include hair colouring and treatments, rebonding, perming, facials, manicures and pedicures, threading, waxing and other personal-care services.
A private Muslimah space provides additional privacy and comfort for customers who prefer it.
The idea behind Gaya Studio is straightforward:
Walk in as yourself. Walk out feeling more confident.
Gaya Chai — Connection in Semenyih
In Setia EcoHill 2, Semenyih, GAYA takes on a completely different form.
Gaya Chai was created around chai, simple food, conversations and community.
Here, chai isn't simply another beverage on a café menu.
It is the experience.
The selection ranges from Masala Chai, Cardamom Tea and Ginger Tea to Bombay Cutting, Assam Tea, Nilgiris Tea, Pink Tea and other varieties, alongside signature sandwiches, toast and casual comfort food.
Gaya Chai has also introduced its own interpretations, including the Gaya Masala Chai Affogato, combining the familiar character of masala chai with a modern dessert experience.
Beyond food and drinks, Gaya Chai is being developed as a neighbourhood space where people can meet, work remotely, spend time with friends or host small gatherings and events. Its philosophy is captured by: “Keenakan Dalam Setiap Tegukan.”
Why Beauty and Chai Under One Brand?
Because GAYA isn't defined by what it sells. It is defined by how it wants people to feel.
At Gaya Studio, that feeling is confidence.
At Gaya Chai, it is warmth, comfort and connection.
Two completely different businesses are therefore connected by one simple philosophy — creating everyday experiences that make people feel good.
A Malaysian Brand Still Being Built
Perhaps the most important part of the GAYA story is that it is still being written.
There are still quiet days.
There are still experiments that may not work.
There are still challenges familiar to thousands of small Malaysian businesses — visibility, competition, operating costs and the constant effort required simply to get people to discover something new.
But GAYA continues.
Not through overnight fame.
Not through celebrity influence.
But through consistency.
One customer.
One haircut.
One conversation.
One cup of chai.
One difficult day.
And one more attempt tomorrow.
From Gaya Studio in Puchong Prima to Gaya Chai in Setia EcoHill 2, Semenyih, the ambition is to grow GAYA into a recognisable homegrown Malaysian lifestyle brand built around confidence, hospitality and human connection.
